Pregnancy Stretch Marks

Studies suggest that pregnancy stretch marks are very common, and develop in between 75 and 90% of women. In dermatology, stretch marks are referred to as striae. Pregnancy stretch marks are referred to as striae gravidarum.

Why do stretch marks occur during pregnancy?

There are several theories as to why stretch marks occur during pregnancy. The most accepted being that stretch marks develop on the areas where the skin has stretched over a short period of time. Pregnancy stretch marks usually appear on the abdomen, breasts, hips, buttocks and thighs.

Another cause of pregnancy stretch marks may be due to an increase in hormonal activity. During pregnancy, the body produces larger amounts of hormones known to remove protein and decrease the amount of collagen in the skin.

Whilst there is, little you can do to avoid hormonal changes, or stop your skin from stretching during pregnancy; there is a lot you can do to keep your skin supple, in good condition and, hopefully, stretch mark free.

During pregnancy, it is especially important to follow a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C, vitamin E and the mineral zinc. Vitamin E oil is high on the list of naturally remedies to help prevent stretch marks occurring during pregnancy.

Whilst it has not been proven that vitamin E will get rid of pregnancy stretch marks, it may go a long way to help prevent them. Cocoa Butter, also naturally rich in vitamin E, has been a popular choice of women for centuries for both the prevention and treatment of stretch marks.

Over time, pregnancy stretch marks fade to silvery white lines, becoming almost translucent and much less noticeable. However, if you are not prepared to wait for this to occur naturally, there are stretch marks creams formulated to nourish the skin and help get rid of any stretch marks that occurred during your pregnancy.
